Running Away by Yazan Iwidat (Palestine) / Mayhkomsh by Shaymaa Shoukry (Egypt)
These two new contemporary dance pieces from Palestine and Egypt question what it means to be Arab in today’s world. With its choreography based on shaking, Mayhkomsh tackles social judgement by revealing the diverse facades of one being, a woman, Sudanese, African, Arab, who dances and is as multi-faceted as we all are. Running Away is a dancer portraying what’s happening inside his head: will he run away from the community that nurtured him and made him who he is? Or will he stay and lose his individuality? Both pieces use dance to grapple with themes of identity, homeland, body politics and societal pressures.
